The History of how “Halloween” came to be:
Halloween is a combination of several different celebrated events, over hundreds of years of interpretation & cultural change. It is a belief that Druids (Celtic Priests) thought that their ancestors rose from the dead on the night of 31st October. Large fires were lit to ward off any Evil Spirits that may have arisen also during their Samhain celebrations. This celebration was the end of summer to celebrate “The Harvest” & welcome in the dark half of the new year.
When the Romans invaded on 43AD they began to introduce their own celebrations into Celtic festivals over the next several hundred years. The Roman festival of “Feralia”, which was over a week long celebration of then passing of their ancestors, was celebrated with the Celtic Festival of Samhain at the end of October. At the same time the Romans combined the day to honour Pomona, she was the goddess of trees & fruit. This is how bobbing for Apples came about because she is usually depicted holding an apple.
In the mid 5th century the Romans were moving out of Britain & following raids by Saxons, Germanic migrants moved in from the South of Britain & the Celtic people were moved North. A new movement of religion also arrived over the next 60 years with St Augustine arriving circa 597 AD, they had their own festivals & celebrations.
They had all hallows day or all saints Day to honour those who died for their beliefs, this was then also moved to combine with the celebrations at the end of October several hundred years later. The church had to approve the move & was moved under the premise to replace the Celtic Samhain celebrations. The night of October 31st was known as all hallows eve until it now known as Halloween.
More facts about Halloween:
- Dressing up was originally thought to be a clever way of disguising yourself from any evil spirits.
- Pumpkins were an American introduction as they were originally made from vegetables like turnips. The Celtic story of Jack who tricked the Devil & after he died was made to roam the night with only a single piece of coal to light his way. Jack carved out the turnip to carry the lit coal.
- In olden times the poor would knock at doors asking for food; this may have been where trick or treating originated from.
- The traditional colours of Orange & Black at Halloween represent Orange as the colour of the leaves, the bonfires of the Samhain celebrations & a symbol of strength. Black is the colour of death & possibly represent the dark half of the year.
